UPPER WESTSIDE–This reporter enjoys his nicotine and apparently has that in common with at least one member of New York’s finest. Besides, sometimes when you are surrounded by hundreds if not thousands of chanting protesters the thought just strikes … “I need a cigarette”. Thanks to a Mr. Jake Feitelson for the picture taken this evening at Times Square.

UPDATE FROM TIMES SQUARE

leave a comment »

TIMES SQUARE–Police are allowing protesters to leave the pocket at Broadway and 46th street and many are doing so. Some are still asking that the barriar to the north first be removed. Police are still massed in the area but outlets are being open after a several hour standoff. This reporter viewed several people getting arrested though the exact circumstances are hard to tell from the thick of the crowd. Chanting continues here with about half the original crowd. They are saying “Fight crime not freedom.”

UPDATE:

The barriar to the north has been removed and protesters are celebrating and now moving across the street to join those on the other side. This reporter saw a strong possibility of mass arrests but it appears at least for now that this is yet another instance where the National Lawyers Guild phone number is stuck in permanent marker on everyone’s arm.

It is a quarter after nine p.m. now, normal pedestrian traffic has returned to the area as activists move to Washington Square where a general assembly will be held at 10 p.m.

Times Square Occupied

TIMES SQUARE–Thousands streamed into Times Square today. Currently several hundred protesters are surrounded by NYPD and not allowed to leave. This reporter is in the thick of it and has viewed the arrival of dozens of riot police. Threats of arrest have been mentioned as police paradoxically ask those here to disperse. Empty buses have rolled by and zip ties are at the ready.

Several arrests have been made.

More Questions Than Answers: A Challenge in Reporting

ZUCCOTTI PARK–This reporter had big plans for tomorrow; a nice feature story was in the works. It had seemed that a certain regularity had descended upon Occupy Wall Street. Alas, tomorrow will be a pivotal day in the evolution of this protest which began with little more than a few dozen activists and grew within weeks to an occupation hosting hundreds of campers and thousands during the day.

For those who have not been keeping up, confrontation is approaching with the powers-that-be. The NYPD will seek to clear Zuccotti Park early tomorrow morning so that it can be cleaned. Occupiers labored all day cleaning the park in an effort to convince city officials to refrain from clearing the park in order to clean it with contracted crews.
